Dubrovnik – September 5, 2016

This is the city that determine the route of this trip!  A well preserved city completely protected by walls.  The shore coordinator recommended for completing all the sightseeing before 4PM in order to avoid the rain that was prognosticated for today.  So we decided to tackle first the cable car ride to the top of the hill next to the city.  I should start by mentioning that the only flat part in Dubrovnik are the central boulevard and a bunch of lateral alleys.  Every other area you are either going up or down hill!

Since it was relatively early in the morning, getting in the cable car was a breeze (almost no line).  From the top of the hill the view is breath taking.  Even with today’s conditions (cloudy and hazy) the view was fantastic.  I took a ton of pictures!  Once we came down from the mountain, we entered the city by a side door on the wall.  Immediately we were confronted with a long ass stair going all the way down to the center of the city.  Shit, we were going down stairs for five solid minutes.  I’m not kidding!  At the bottom our legs were jelly.  But we still needed to do the circuit of the walls…

Picture this, going up four stories of stairs but straight (no landing in between) and narrow as hell.  That what it takes to get on top of the wall!  At the top our hearts wanted to explode, our legs were on fire, and we were sweating like marathoners.  As we recovered our breaths, we noticed that in about 300 yards the wall goes over hill overlooking the ocean.  How do you get there?  You guessed it… more FUCKING stairs!  At least they were not continuous.  But it was a huff none the less. From there the wall go down the other side of the hill towards the port of the city.  Do you remember that saying that go: “no rest for the weary”? Oh well, that was us today.  At the port you immediately go up a flight of stairs and continue on the other side of the wall.  And what does this wall do?  You’re right again, go over another fucking hill.  You climb all the way until you get to the highest tower on the wall.  You may be secretly asking if I made it, right?  YES I DID!

I forgot to mention that Dubrovnik is King’s Landing in Game of Thrones.  So after exploring the city left and right we ended in front of the steps leading to the “high septum”.  Or where Cercei Lanister began her walk of shame.  I looked for her all over the place so I could cover her, but I couldn’t find her….  We had lunch at local restaurant near those steps.  The food was really good and price wise it wasn’t bad.  The funny part was listening to “regueton” music throughout our lunch.  Who would have thought that such music will reach so far away from Puerto Rico.  Go figure!  So we used the fact that the sun was shining and purchase a couple of trinkets and made a bee line for our bus.  We got back to the ship in the nick of time before the torrential rain started.

If you plan to visit Dubrovnik, be aware of the following things: their currency is the Krun (not the euro), you can pay with dollars and euros anywhere, if paying with credit cards let the cards do the exchange rate not the merchant (you lose a bunch of money asking them to charge your card in Dollars or euros), English is spoken with some difficulty (so be flexible), there are no Starbucks or fast food in sight, and (opposite to cities in western Europe) free Internet is rare at local establishments.
