Paris – 2/23/18

Llegamos al aeropuerto Charles de Gauge a eso de las 8:30 AM.  El viaje no hubiese sido malo si nuestros asientos en coach hubiesen sido menos duros!  Era como dormir en un banco de la iglesia.  Salir del aeropuerto fue rapido y sin contratiempos.  Ahora el tapón que nos cogió para llegar a nuestro hotel en el medio de la ciudad fue otra historia.  Y debo mencionar que la gente en esta ciudad guía mucho peor que en Puerto Rico!

Como era de esperarse, nuestro cuarto no estaba listo.  Pero la muchacha del front desk nos almacenó las maletas, nos dio un mapa, y nos mando para la calle.  Que dicho sea de paso, mas amable no podía ser… quizás sea una tramboya para hacernos pensar que los parisinos son buena gente.  Nuestro hotel queda a menos de medio bloque del Arco de Triunfo.  Así que la aventura comenzó por ahí.  No importa cuantas fotos, videos, o películas uno haya visto, nada lo prepara para la magnitud de este monumento.  De igual modo, el caminar los Campos Elisios te hace comprender cuando el Tour de France te dicen que tienen que SUBIR al arco 8 veces.   No que sea una guinda, pero sí es una subida.

Para cuando terminamos la caminata de los Campos Elisios ya era casi el medio día y decidimos volver al hotel y descansar un rato.  Ya recargados, decidimos visitar la Torre Eiffel.  Gracias Dios desde el Arco la caminata es mayormente bajando.  La torre no tiene nada que envidiarle a otros monumento al rededor del mundo.  Aun a las 4 de la tarde las filas para comprar tickets y subir a la torre eran extremadamente largas.  Así que la vimos de afuera y decidimos regresar otro día.  No queriendo desperdiciar el día tan lindo que hacia, decidimos caminar la riviera del rio.  Debido a las lluvias severas que se han experimentado las ultimas semanas, todavía el rio  tiene ciertas secciones inundadas lo cual previene el acceso a algunos de los restaurantes flotantes.  La caminata nos llevo hasta la Plaza de Concordia… o donde Napoleón monto un obelisco egipcio que se robo para tapar el hecho de que en el mismo sitio era donde estaba la guillotina donde ejecutaron a Louis XVI y María Antonieta.  Todo estuvo chevere hasta que nos dimos cuenta de la caminata que teníamos que dar para regresar al hotel. Tuvimos que subir los Campos Elisios nuevamente!

Ya cerca de el hotel encontramos un restaurante con menú en ingles y un mozo que no le molesto el que mi francés se limite oui, merci, y si’l vous plaît.  Yo se algo mas que eso, pero es tan rudimentario que es risible.  Anyway, comimos bueno y a precio razonable.

After trying to sleep on a church pew, yes that’s the way our seats felt on the fly over, we arrived in Paris at 8:30 AM.  Getting our of the airport was a breeze.  But the traffic jam coming into the city was a different story!  On top of the traffic you need to be aware that Paris drivers are very “creative”.   As expected, we arrived at the hotel so early that our room was not ready.  But the front desk lady, which couldn’t be nicer, store our luggage, gave a map, couple of pointers, and sent us to the street.

Luckily our hotel is less than a block from the Arc de Triumph.  Nothing will prepare you for the magnitude of this monument.  Having seen the Champs-Elysées so many times as the finish of the Tour de France, we decided to walk them.  We can assure you that the commentators are absolutely correct when they tell the people that the cyclist are going UP to the Arc.  When finished, we were ready for a full rest at the hotel before going out again.

Today was a gorgeous winter day (36F) that made long walks a little bit easier.  So we decided to walk to the Eiffel Tower.  The tower is more imposing that what we could imagine.  We were surprised by the long lines to buy tickets and go up the tower (they are separate lines) even at 4PM.  So we decided to take pictures and come another day a little bit earlier and with pre-purchased tickets. We continued along the river Seine all the way to Place de la Concorde.  Today you’ll find a ferris wheel and the famous stolen Egyptian obelisk.  Few people know and remember that the obelisk marks the spot where the guillotine used to be.  The same spot where they executed the last king of france and his wife, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette!

Our walk back to the hotel (up the Champs-Elysées) was rewarded with a great dinner in a restaurant the thankfully have English menus and the waiters did not mind switching to English to wait on us.  Saving me the embarrassment of having to use my limited french!
