Paris 2/26/18

FRIO, FRIO, y mas fucking FRIO!!!!  Hoy se paso el día en 29F.  Lo que hacia caminar por las calles una tortura.  Máxime con el viento que hacia en todos lados.  Por ende, nos montamos en una gugua turística.  No que eso ayudara mucho con el frio, pero por lo menos no nos congelábamos.  Paseamos la mayoría de los lugares mas famosos de París.  El frio no me dejo fotografiar la mayoría de ellos ya que el bajarse de la guagua para dos o tres fotos representaba una espera de 20 minutos a la intemperie.  Guardamos la tortura para ver el show de luces de la torre Eiffel.  Por mas que nos tratamos de cobijar detrás de una tienda en la Plaza Trocadero, fue una completa tortura.

En otras ocaciones me han señalado el que no hago reviews de los lugares que me quedo al igual que de otros negocios.  Aquí mi evaluación:

París – Aun en invierno es una ciudad bonita con mucas cosas únicas que ver.  Ahora no es una ciudad amigable al turista ni se presta para caminarla de la misma manera que otras ciudades europeas.  Es comparable a lo que experimentaría en Mahattan o Washington, DC.  Muchos landmarks que ver pero el turismo no es lo primario.

Hotel – Nosotros nos quedamos en Mercure a dos bloques del Arco del Triunfo.  Localización es excelente y tener internet ilimitado gratis es un plus.  Pero los cuartos son extremamente pequeños y gran parte del staff no habla ingles.  All and all, me volvería a quedar con ellos y los recomendaría a otros viajeros.

Restaurantes – No cominos en ninguno que valga la pena ser mencionado.  Alternamos entre dos pequeños restaurantes cerca del hotel.  Y la ultima vez que cenamos preferimos pedir una botella de vinos y una tabla de quesos y jamones.  Si usted es como yo, un carnívoro certificado, prepare el bolsillo… la carne es extremadamente cara.  Los hamburgers valen 15 euros en casi todos lados!

Puntos de Interés – Demasiados para mencionar… tenga en cuenta que dependiendo de la época del año, vale la pena comprar boletos con meses de anticipación.  Especialmente para subir a la Torre Eiffel usando los elevadores.  Ahora en invierno hay que comprarlos con 2 semanas de anticipación.  Así que imagínese para el verano!  El Louvre y Palacio de Versalles debe tener taquillas par entrar justo cuando abran.  De lo contrario hará una fila interminable y no podrá disfrutar de la misma manera.  Por lo menos un mes antes, comience a caminar todos los días.  Haga caminatas lo mas largo posible para aclimatar su cuerpo.  Nosotros caminamos un total de 8.8 millas el primer día, 12.4, 9.7, y 3.3 millas respectivamente.  Y si fuese otra época del año estoy seguro que hubiésemos caminado mucho mas.  Así que prepárese para que le pueda sacar provecho a su viaje.

COLD, VERY COLD, VERY FUCKING COLD!!!!  Temperature never went above 29F and the constant wind could cut through all your layers.  The cold made walking around very difficult and painful.  We settle for hoping into a city tour bus.  It took us around most of Paris’ main attractions.  You won’t see many pictures because stepping out of the bus to take a picture represented staying in the cold for another 20 minutes waiting for the next bus.  We save all our strength for the Eiffel Tower light show.  It was well worth it!

In the past, people has pointed out that I do not provide reviews of the hotels and other areas of the place we visit.  Here it is my take for Paris:

Paris – Even in winter, it is a beautiful city with many landmarks worth visiting.  But Paris it is not a tourist freindly city.  It is the capital of France and therefor you will not see many of the things you see at other european cities that cater to torist (i.e. Rome, Florence, Prague, Munich, etc.)  You could compare Paris with Manhattan or DC.  Both have many things to see and visit, but toirisim is not their bread and butter.

Hotel -We stayed at the Mercure hotel near the Arc the Triumph.  Its location is fantastic and includes free unlimited wifi.  The rooms are comfortable and very clean.  But they are super small.  Also, not all personnel speaks other languages, so you’ll be force to speak french.  All and all, I would stay again at the property and would recommend it to other visitors.

Restaurants -We did not eat any restaurant worth mentioning.  Some nights we were so tire that preferred to order wine and some appetizers and head back to the hotel.  Be aware that meat is very expensive in France (an average burger will cost you 15 euros), so you’ll have to eat more chicken, fish, and veggies if you don’t want to end up with a high bill every night.

What to see -Too many to mention.  But you should plan ahead and book tickets for main attractions.  Depending on the time of the year you visit Paris, you may have to buy ticket for the Eiffel Tower months in advance.  Also, for the Louvre and Versailles make sure to buy tickets for the time they open.  Is the only way to beat long lines and enjoy your visit.  I strongly advise you to start doing daily walks (the longer the better) months in advance.  We walked 8.8, 12.4, 9.7, and 3.3 miles the days we visited.  And I’m sure we would have walked a lot more if the weather would not have been so cold.
